What happened at the box office in October?

Paramount released Street Fighter in North America on Oct 16, 2026, rated PG-13. It opened at No. 1 with $30,775,377 from 3,575 theaters, according to actuals from The Numbers. The Sunday studio estimate had been $31M. Deadline reported another $20.1M from 65 international markets, for a $51.1M worldwide start.

The film is the first release under Paramount's distribution deal with Legendary, The Hollywood Reporter said. Kitao Sakurai directed it. Audiences gave it a B- CinemaScore, the same grade as the 1994 film.

The daily numbers showed the shape of the run early. Friday brought in $12.95M, Saturday $10.81M and Sunday $7.01M, according to Box Office Mojo. Sunday was close to half of Friday, which usually means fans turned out early and few casual viewers followed. Box office analyst David A. Gross called it a "good opening" but added that "critics' reviews are weak and the audience score is soft," AFP reported.

By Oct 23, Box Office Mojo had Street Fighter at $40,683,634 domestic and $60,783,634 worldwide. Saturday estimates for the Oct 23-25 weekend, reported by TheWrap, put it down 73% to $8.4M, with $46.7M domestic. DC Studios' Clayface was tracking about $24M to take No. 1.

Why did Resident Evil hold up so much better?

Sony's Resident Evil, directed by Zach Cregger, opened Sept 18 with $60,152,878 domestic. That is nearly double Street Fighter's opening, on a smaller reported budget: $75M against $82M. The Hollywood Reporter said the opening was far above the $40M Sony had first projected. Variety said it was the biggest start in the franchise. The previous best was $26M for Resident Evil: Afterlife in 2010.

The bigger story is what came after. On Street Fighter's opening weekend, Resident Evil was still No. 7 in its fifth weekend, with $5,501,456. That was a drop of only 36%. Compare that with the 73% second-weekend fall estimated for Street Fighter. A film that loses about a third of its audience each week can keep earning for a long time. A film that loses nearly three quarters runs out of road quickly.

Word of mouth is the likely link. Resident Evil earned a B+ CinemaScore, two steps above Street Fighter's B-. It has also done most of its business abroad: $213,013,664 international against $151,530,532 domestic, according to The Numbers. China leads at $50.7M, ahead of the UK at $18.2M and Mexico at $11.8M.

How do 2026's game adaptations compare?

Four game films reached cinemas this year, and they cover almost the full range of outcomes. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie passed $1B worldwide. Resident Evil made 4.9 times its budget. Mortal Kombat II opened to $38,501,177 domestic, more than Street Fighter did, and finished at 1.6 times its $80M budget. Street Fighter sits at about 0.7 times its budget so far.

The opening weekend alone did not sort them. Mortal Kombat II opened bigger than Street Fighter, and Resident Evil opened below Mario. What separated the results was how long each film kept selling tickets after the first weekend.

For scale, A Minecraft Movie holds the Guinness record for a game film's opening weekend at $313.7M worldwide, including $162.75M domestic. The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023 remains the top-grossing game film at about $1.36B. The 1994 Street Fighter made $99,423,521 worldwide, according to a secondary compilation on Wikipedia.

Is Street Fighter a flop?

No major outlet in our sources has called it one, and we will not either. The numbers so far show a No. 1 opening followed by a steep second-weekend drop, with worldwide grosses below the reported production budget. Budgets also leave out marketing, so they are only a partial guide to whether a film makes money.

Some figures are still moving. Studio Sunday estimates and Monday actuals for the Oct 23-25 weekend were pending at the time of writing. International totals may also lag. The $20.1M listed for Street Fighter abroad may only cover the opening weekend.

What is not confirmed yet?

Several claims are circulating that we could not verify with major outlets.

  • Second-weekend figures for Street Fighter differ between outlets. Our $8.4M, down 73%, is a Saturday-based estimate until Monday actuals arrive.
  • A projected final worldwide gross, a possible loss on the film, and reports that the director backtracked on sequel plans come from Cosmic Book News only.
  • A claim that the studio had hoped for a $70M opening comes from a secondary aggregator and has not been confirmed by Variety or Deadline.
  • Resident Evil's worldwide total differs slightly between The Numbers and the Wikipedia list. We use The Numbers figure of $364,544,196 as of Oct 25.

What to watch next

The next firm data point is Monday's actuals for the Oct 23-25 weekend. They will settle which second-weekend figure for Street Fighter is right, and whether Clayface opened near its tracked $24M. After that, watch whether Box Office Mojo and The Numbers update Street Fighter's international total beyond the opening weekend, and how long Resident Evil stays in the top 10.
